Kids that were supposed to be running around the house with their beautiful steps and making a lot of pleasant activities in the house for the family suddenly will be dull and secluded and living in the feelings of isolation. Suddenly they are into a different mood, not attentive, not bothered to mingle with any one, and harming themselves or being hyperactive uncontrollably. As April 2nd is known as World Autism Day in this Autism awareness week lets see the basics of what autism is and how the parents are made to suffer so much due to this.

Autism is a big phenomenon in today's children and in our Indian society. Children not growing in their mental abilities as much as they should grow can be termed as Autism. This is a rare occurrence and may be one or two children in a hundred could be suffering with this. In the year 2023 they have recognized that there are 70 crores of persons suffering with Autism world over. Some times it may not be a very big problem but it could give a lot of hardship to those suffering and to their families. With proper information autism could be identified as early as from 3 years of age and it comes without any gender difference for both boys and girls.

WHAT IS AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER?

Children with Autism may

  1. Engages in repetitive motor behaviors like rocking body, nodding head and flapping hands.
  2. They may be restless/hyperactive.
  3. The child may insist on doing the same activity for a long duration.
  4. Inappropriate attachment to objects.

Guidelines for behavioural management of children with Autism

  1. Provide a predictable environment and routine: Create a pictorial routine for your child. This way the child will know which activity follows next.
  2. Structured Environment: Parents must try and create a structured environment which includes appropriate lighting facilities and free of loud noises. It is important to make this environment safe and free of harmful objects like knives and sharp objects, with which the child might accidentally hurt her/himself.
  3. Prepare the child for changes in advance: If there is going to be change in the child's routine you must tell the child before the change takes place. For example, on a given day the child may not have study time in the evening. Instead, he or she may have to go to a therapy session. So, the parent should prepare the child well in advance by showing picture or saying, “Today instead of study time we will be going to the therapist in the evening.”

Behavioural Management of children with Autism aims towards making the child as independent as possible facilitating their development & learning reducing behavioral difficulties, promoting socialization and improving their quality of life.

There are different approaches to manage children with autism. Depending upon the needs of the child, he/she may require various therapies like speech and language intervention and occupational therapy. The Government has introduced INCLUSIVE Education in the present scenario and appointed Inclusive Education for such students in Secondary Stage (IEDSS).
