An Integrative Multidisciplinary Model for Pediatric Neurodevelopmental Rehabilitation Based on IKS in Kerala

Dr. Shilpa Arikkath

The rising prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), necessitates the development of comprehensive and integrative models of care. ATIDHI (Ayurveda and Therapeutic Integration for Developmental Habilitative Intervention) represents an evolving multidisciplinary framework that systematically combines principles of Ayurveda with contemporary rehabilitation sciences to address the complex and heterogeneous needs of children with developmental challenges.

ATIDHI delivers structured intervention programs for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), global developmental delay, speech and language disorders, learning disabilities, and sensory processing dysfunction. The model is based on a coordinated interdisciplinary approach, wherein multiple therapeutic domains operate within a unified clinical framework, thereby moving beyond conventional single-discipline intervention strategies.

The intervention protocol integrates diverse therapeutic modalities, including Ayurveda-based pediatric care, therapeutic Yoga, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Sensory Integration Therapy, Behavioural Therapy, Inclusive Education, and Physiotherapy. This integrative design aims to concurrently address underlying physiological dysregulation and functional developmental impairments characteristic of neurodevelopmental conditions.

A central component of the ATIDHI model is the application of principles developed by Dr. Dinesh K. S., a pioneering researcher in this domain and Professor and Head of the Department of Kaumarabhritya at Vaidyarathnam P. S. Varier Ayurveda College. These principles, derived from Kaumarabhritya—the classical branch of Ayurveda focusing on pediatric health—are grounded in evidence-based scientific protocols. Within this framework, emphasis is placed on achieving systemic homeostasis, particularly across domains such as neurological regulation, gastrointestinal function, sleep architecture, and behavioral stability. Such physiological optimization is hypothesized to enhance the child’s capacity to engage with and respond effectively to rehabilitative interventions.

Therapeutic Yoga is incorporated as a structured adjunct modality to facilitate improvements in motor coordination, postural control, attentional processes, and emotional regulation. Its inclusion supports sensory integration mechanisms and promotes adaptive Behavioural responses in children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

An essential feature of the ATIDHI model is its focus on caregiver-mediated intervention. Parents and caregivers are systematically trained to implement individualized therapeutic strategies within the home setting, thereby ensuring continuity of care, improving skill generalization, and enhancing long-term developmental outcomes.

The ATIDHI framework reflects an integrative paradigm that bridges traditional medical systems and modern therapeutic sciences. Such models hold significant potential in contributing to contextually relevant, scalable, and sustainable approaches to pediatric neurodevelopmental rehabilitation, particularly within resource-diverse healthcare settings.

ATIDHI is having 9 centres in Kerala.

Autism Awareness Month Message from ATIDHI:

Autism is not a limitation—it is a different way of experiencing and responding to the world. Each child with Autism carries a unique pattern of strengths, sensitivities, and potential that deserves to be understood, not judged.

At ATIDHI, we believe that early identification, timely intervention, and a compassionate, structured support system can make a meaningful difference in a child’s developmental journey. When science, therapy, and empathetic caregiving come together, children are not just trained—they are enabled to connect, communicate, and grow in their own way.

Awareness is the first step. Acceptance is the next. But true change begins with informed action—within families, schools, and communities.

This Autism Awareness Month, let us move beyond labels and look deeper—towards abilities, possibilities, and progress. With the right support, every child can find their path, and every small step forward becomes a powerful milestone.

Together, let us create a world that understands, includes, and nurtures every neurodiverse child—with knowledge, patience, and hope.
