Launched in 2016, Project Inclusion is a nationwide initiative by the Sri Aurobindo Society aimed at strengthening inclusive education across India. The programme focuses on equipping teachers with the knowledge and skills required to support children with neurodevelopmental differences, including learning disabilities, intellectual differences, autism spectrum disorder, and ADHD. Despite its impact, the initiative is yet to reach a large segment of the educator community.
In India, one in every ten children is born with or acquires a physical, neurological, or sensory difference, amounting to over eight million children. Alarmingly, only 45 per cent of these children have access to schooling, while the country has just 120,781 registered special educators. As children who learn differently continue to face exclusion from mainstream classrooms, the responsibility to create supportive learning environments increasingly falls on teachers and educational stakeholders.
Addressing this critical gap, Project Inclusion was designed to empower educators to identify learning differences and foster inclusive classrooms. While teachers and parents aspire to provide equitable education, traditional pedagogical models often lack the awareness and resources needed to support diverse learners.
The Project Inclusion App bridges this divide by offering practical tools, best practices, and accessible resources to educators and caregivers. By promoting a least restrictive learning environment and enabling personalised learning support, the app advances inclusive education as an integral part of the mainstream system—ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
The Project Inclusion App, available for download on the Google Play Store, supports learning in English as well as multiple Indian languages. Designed for ease of use, the application guides educators and parents through a comprehensive understanding of educational differences and their practical solutions.
The learning journey includes interactive videos, concise reading material, and objective-type assessments to reinforce understanding. Upon successful completion, users are awarded a certificate of competence in Inclusive Teaching, while special educators earn 50 Continuing Rehabilitation Education (CRE) points.
Recognizing the growing need for inclusive classrooms, several State Governments have begun mandating Project Inclusion training for teachers, underscoring its relevance in building a more skilled, responsive, and inclusive education system.
